Texas county taking steps to keep animals away from people


Coyote trapping has begun in one Texas county just outside of Houston. The county is under a contract currently with the Texas Wildlife Services Program for predatory trapping services until March and will offer a bounty for each coyote that is captured. Coyote sightings are becoming increasingly common throughout much of the United States. As human development continues to expand, the animals are forced to become more comfortable with humans and move into more populous areas.

A man was bitten by a coyote in a Texas neighborhood recently. The man was out in his neighborhood taking pictures when a coyote came up and bit his foot. The man sustained only minor injuries but coyote sightings in urban areas are becoming commonplace. Coyotes are mainly active at night but they are opportunists and will become active during the daylight hours when there are opportunities to feed.

Coyote trapping in full swing

Coyote trapping started as deer season ended in Lavaca County.

The slender, dog-like carnivores will eat pretty much anything and adapt well to different environments, enabling them to pose a range of threats to livestock, wildlife and property. “It is very significant in some areas and not as much in others,” said Shannon Deforest, the county’s AgriLife Extension agent. Man bit by coyote in Round Rock neighborhood

On Wednesday, the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) said a man was bitten by a coyote in the Teravista neighborhood in Round Rock.

Patricia Gutierrez, a spokesperson for WCSO, told KVUE the call came in at around 10 a.m. saying the man was taking pictures when the coyote bit his left foot, resulting in minor injuries. Many Teravista residents frequently walk their dogs around the neighborhood. See more
